Frankly speaking, I MISS SPYs!!!! Oh to the good old days! Its been literally 2 years since we had our trip and the crazy mad sessions of meetings and outings. The ups (where all those fun outings and crazy night suppers + going all out to go against the YL a.k.a Whale - HAHAHAHA!) and the downs (where all go mad crazy with all those loggies stuffs which the logs team did awesome job!). Think about that make me reminisce the fun times we had! Heex.

Anyways, how's everyone doing eh?? I supposed all busy working and studying like mad cow! Bahs! Tats just so yucks!

It's been almost ages since I last have this bloggy updated. I got alot of outstanding posts. But i no time la. Sigh. I'm really.oh-so-busy. Yes, I'm going almost insane with the amount of work and also school. Its amazing how a fishmonger can also get stressed by its dead fishes. hahaha. ok, very cold n lame. :P

Anyway, HELLLOOOOO SPYS 08!!!! Haven't heard from anyone for the longest time ever. How's everyone doing with their life?? I MISS EVERY SINGLE ONE of u all man. Boohooo~ Due to that, I decided to dedicate a post on my heart-felt feeeeeling on SPYS (as if). Ok, it's gonna be damn long post, so slowly read and find your name ok. hahahaha. it's either i speak ill of u, or i praise u damn good or maybe best of both worlds? hehx~ hope this will sweep away the 1m thickness of cobwebs. :)))))

- The most irritating YL a.k.a steapfather/whale and also the most haolian-est ever (Rezal). Where have u been?! so busy with Ms Wynn & u completely forgotten all about your stepdaughter. how could u abandon me?? remember e dream i told u before abt u abandoning me? i guess its happening now. sigh. Kinda miss your nagging but not when it never stops. :D

- My lovely godmother who's in US (Winnie). I think she's now drowned with all the amount of books she has to read up. Afterall, she's in HARVARD leh. Mai siao-siao ok. Hope ur doing good there godma! Jiayoh jiayoh!!

- The ever gorgeous stepmother who's now religiously taking her caffeine (Venetia). Stop drinking too much coffee laa! Later your stomach cannot take it & u might just require another jab. Take care hor!! wonders when will she get a bf and me getting a new stepfather. hahahah. wonders wonders wonders.

-My most incredible & outstanding 'lao shi' (Grace). The most THICK-SKIN woman cum Edu Comm head ever exist who produce simple yet amazing posters. Hahaha. Never fail to knock some sense into my head. Well, I've learned one good lesson from her and apparently I'm getting good at it. C&C. thanks eh! :D

-The perfect photographer who never fail to produce ugly photos of me (Tuty) yet at the same time produce the most breath-taking pictures which makes me go WOW! owaes sharing good things with me. she crazy. stays in tampines, work in tuas. wth sia. i think i can die travelling from one end to another. D.I.E >.<

-My beloved and no-longer fat buddy khoo (Hanzhi). She been running ever since she came back from US. e reason coz she wants to shed those fats away. aiyah. I missed her tons! Received an sms from her asking to go out but sadly, its on Friday. Having night class la buddy! I guess next time k! *hugs*

-The ever-so-cute & delectable minah (Charmaine). The minah who is super 'PANAS' who's known for being so dramatic in her every actions. The best standing comedy ever. lovely! Lucky gal who found her love, Koichi. Spending alot of quality time with him hor?!

-Hail to the Queen! (Yen Peng). Oh man, I think I also miss her stunts. She damn blur and spastic leh. Wahahahaha. *evil luff* Always with her trademark pose when taking pictures. OMG can?! makes me feel like uploading her really unglam photo of the year. Love her to death coz she owaes call me belle! :DDDD

-Ni hao ma Ongppi?! (Violet). She's one hell of an atas China woman can?! Another Ong who's blur. No doubt her snide remarks yet arguably funny is her forte. She damn good at it la. Those who cannot understand will never know if she's speaking ill of u. wahahahaha. perfect skill. pass it to me pls! ^^

-Eating PAU in a straigt LINE (Pauline). Oh man, she's gotta be the most smallest girl ever. Think she's a dwarf ah or maybe I'm the giant. definitely not the latter k. :P Aiyoh, i really think she super chilli padi leh. where got ppl so small can be so lihai wan? she's going for her hongkong race. damn zai!

-Let's mix some chemicals & BOOM! Momo-chan appears! (Mumtas). she's also known for being a great tailong in getting ppl to pay money. damn xiong ok! Haven't been disturbing her for donkey years lor. she owaes want to maintain her image leh. forever thinks that her students are spying on her moves. hahaha. the best thing is she finds it amusing that ppl like me can exist.

-Basking under the sun, rolling on the sandy beaches. Yea, that's (Wendy). She's now over in Hawaii for her vacation. SO gooooddd can?! jealous. Hahaha. eversince G came out with the ponyo poster of her, whenever I see her now, she resembles alot of Ponyo. Darns~ sorry babe. can't help it laaaa. :)

-Indian but NOT. wah lao. Identity Crisis ah? (Nimales). One hell of a SLOW & steady guy ever. I seriously can die lor. The one who starts his conversation not with words but with, Hmmmmm..... stops and then Hmmmmmm... again till he find the correct word to spit out. Maybe there's gold in his mouth la. WTH?!

-Sarcastic, boring yet interesting, hikikomori (Boon Kian). Proud to say that this hikikomori guy is my sg buddy. His geography is damn good. he knows which are the bus we should take to reach particular destination. All because he loves the idea of taking random buses and explore where it ends. He's now busy-ing himself with French girls or was it French maids?? :DDD

-Always on the go. (Lilian). My buddy lua. frankly, whenever there's gatherings, i owaes hope she joins too. simply because I can hitch a ride from her. Hahahaha. Hey, I'm just being true and not hypocrite ok. wahahahahaha. Anw, we stay so near each other but never get to bump into her lor. jurong is really BIG ok! heex~

-the one with lots of encouragement words. (Kaifen). another small girl that never fail to amaze me. Damn, she got loud voice ok. But end up eating too much of strepsils. She's so small but got a very big heart. Kind can? unlike me so evil. Bleahs~

-loud-haler & attention-grabbing ever. (Cecilia). DAMN! She's got the maximum shrilling voice ever. I think if she shuts for a day, the world will ends. wahahahaha. Anw, it's great to have her ard la. Coz she owaes surrounds herself with good-looking guys. drools can!? thanks to her, i can get to wash my eyes too. awesome bay-beh!! love it k.

-tallest, skinniest gal (Hafizah). This woman can eat alot but her weight will never increase that fast. where got like tat de?! Sighs. i eat & i gain weight very fast. slow metabolism rate. anw, she's now over at e west coz she now busy with her degree at ntu. lucky she's staying in hostel else i'm so gonna make fun of her travelling from bedok all e way to jurong. hahahaha.

-lao liu!!! (Chin Han). this one has gotta be e most smartest guy when comes to statistic. he teach at NUS High School leeehhhh. Where got ppl so smarttt de? ahahah. but hell yea, he damn smart tat i got him to help me with my stats assignment. :S trust me, lao liu seems to be very quiet but he do grumble alot. wahahaha. still owe u a thai dinner!

-smoker and still dun wan to quit. wah lao. wan to die early is it? (Justin). this guy have got to be the most annoying guy ever. super duper annoying i think i can whack him la. but on a side note, he's the most chillax dude. love that chillax spirit lor. now he busy slogging his life studying in TP. :]

-slippers, ugly berms, 80's shirt!!! (Desmond). The most uncle-est ever. he's the so called gal magnet despite being labelled as uncle by us but never the rest of the girls. like wtf rite? den again, he's gotta be the most stressful person ever. forever feel so stressed up de. i also dunno y leh. tats y he live up to his name as uncle lor. :P

-Alvin, Qiao Er & Siti - dunno wat to describe leh. coz really got not much impact on me la. so better not say much else later i talk rubbish. more jialat lor! hahaha. :DDD

-Letters, postcards. (Arthur). He's gotta be the most coolest postman ever exist from Japan who loves eating duriansssss. I really miss posting letters through him and how we SPYs became his loyal customers. hahaha. Frankly, he's owaes drop us an email or two asking how the SPYs are doing. Have been wanting to email him, but the laziness overrides my wants. hahahaha. hope he's doing great back in Tokyo with his fams.

-Quiet, demure, sweetest ever. (Boshi) Oh man, she's e best n cutest Jap gal lor. though some ppl think likewise but hell yea, she's e best and kawaaiiiii! Wonder how she's doing back there. hope she's doing great n dandy. never get to talk much with her ah. i think i anti-social ah. hahaha. but den again, hope she's fine back in Japan.

-last but not e least, e NL (Colonel). apparently, he got famous for being such a daddy to most of the other pys (sort of). but lost the title of popular NL to Mummy Becky from Philippines. She rocks socks ok!! Hahaha. no worries Colonel, i still think ur e best k. thanks to ur regimental acts, it makes us stronger than ever to go against u! wahahahaha *evil luff* i miss steamboat at ur house can? sigh. sigh. sigh. when can we have tat session again? hmmm.

ps// SO EXCITED ABT THE REUNION ONBOARD on 26th Nov. Apparently, those who picked up my call in e middle of the night are the people who's going for it. craziness but yes, i called ppl at nite just to ask if they are interested to go. hahahaha. :D

SPY08 did the first today or probably many sharings- providing insights, tips, examples and what nots in whatever time that's left after our YL's always lond-winded speech. (erm, he went for almost half an hour.) . Winnie and Tuty gave him the time-out signals... Of course, a sharing in SSEAYP camp is not complete if the press/PRM folks didn't do their job our getting photos... So here's one for the occasion and wishing the SPY09 the best in their future endeavours and erm lotsa work! May more money flows, friendship tighten and laughters prevail! hahahah... It's been almost a year since we first know each other & getting to understand one another even better (we successfully did!). Apparently, most of us were settled down with our job & school. BUT interestingly, Nimales who's gonna start school soon, had a part time job as a cleaner over at NTU. SPYs' Believe it or Not! (same phrase as the Ripley's Believe it or not. heex!) If u guys dun believe, pls let the picture talks. wahahaha!

charmaine finished her lunch & looking ard trying to find a cleaner to clear her plates. guess who she found?

it was Nimales! *jaws dropped*

alamak! how come the cleaner use barehands to wipe table ah? run out of cloth ah?

nevertheless, charmaine was pretty satisfied with his barehands cleaning of table service. just look at her ear-to-ear smile. :D

charmaine was supposed to return all her used cutlery after meals. den again, the cleaner service was awesome. came right after u finished ur meal. haha!

there u go, the first class service cleaner doing his job.

gotta know from Nim, different basin consists of different plates.

a good service is never complete without a smile plastered on your face. So, Rule No:1 to great service is SMILE. ^^

to make things easier for those ppl inside washing the plates, excess food is thrown inside the garbage.

and.......... this is the part whereby the real cleaner came. OMG can?!

But Nim continued his job diligently & nonchalantly. *salute*

Nim was 'cursing' & 'swearing' when I told him to clear his own plates. aiyah, just one more plate & we let you off ok!

ok lor! I'll finish up with this final plate & I'm off duty ok?

therefore ppl, to be a first class service cleaner is never an easy job. WELL DONE to NIMALES for being able to do so. GOOD JOB!!

Yay!! Finally we get to celebrate the last baby SPY which proudly belongs to one & only Wendy Pang Shu Hui!! Woohoo~ Oh wells, she turned 27 on June 14th. As the saying goes, a year older = a year wiser. Anyways, just wanna wish u a great year ahead of ya and may all the good things come rolling to u. :D

Btw, hope u had fun during movie marathon & enjoyed eating the lopsided cake. As owaes, asilah is super blur & she brought out the cake happily n completely forgotten all about the candles. Due to that, we had to 'rewind' the whole scene again & this time round with candles which is lit virtually. Thanks momo-chan! Super paiseh! Haha!

On a side note, since this will be our last celebration by the Birthday Bash Committee, we hoped you guys have enjoyed it as much as we organised it (for the past year). Nevertheless, hope you guys will still keep in touch & continue those crazy outings.

Yay! 10th May marks the day whereby our one & only ONG PING PING got married! Wooohoooo~ We are soooo happy for her can?! She's happily married to ALAN SIM!

So we SPYs decided to turn up at Ongppi's wedding in our smart A2 uniform. Damn! We were sooooo 'outstanding' and coordinated when we entered the ballroom. For a moment, it felt like we are a Mafia gang. OMG! I can't believe we became the center of attraction man.. hahaha! all thanks to our craziness to be decked in our red A2 uniform. POWER!! Unlike Queen who's a wet blanket, decided to turn up in her own clothes. -.-

Oh, for Ongppi's wedding, we had LPYs, JPY & MaPY to join us in the memorable occasion. They were here to visit Spore & also attend her wedding. How awesome is tat?! :P

Nevertheless, while Violet is happily having her wedding affair at the front stage, we SPYs we happily taking tons of photos.. haha! it was definitely a fun activity to do eversince SSEAYP! We brought phototaking to a brand new level, especially when the camera lens comes with fisheye lens! hahah.. Thanks to our Tuty!! :D

Anyway, Nimales was supposed to choreograph a dance for Ongppi! But its all TALK only. Apparently, we did not succeed in our plan to perform at her wedding. :( Ok, enough of my ramblings, let's see some photos ok! :D

And our Nimales suggested this quaint restaurant over at Shaw Towers, Sofra, which serves Turkish cuisine...

There is a history behind this restaurant, and apparently, Nimales only, only, bring a selected few to the same. ;P

Hahah... there's a kitten amidst those bushes all scared and thin and being such a poor thing. Even Cecilia offered her shoebox that she shopped earlier for them... Hahah... Glad to know we are all kind to animals... I remembered this being a long discussion, in the end the kitten didn't want to come put and Charmaine need not wonder how to explain her parents how there's another kitten in the house...

Apparently, both of them born in the same month. Fizah turned 27th on 13 April & Rezal turned 29th on 26th April. What a perfect coincidence! Perfecto~

25th April marks the union of 2 hearts & also the most memorable day for them. They were solemnized by a Father, witnessed together by the SPYs and a representative from JPY - Mariemon! The union of 2 loving souls. Ahhhh, indeed a blessing!

To those who missed out on their solemnization ceremony, fret not! We have video-ed the ceremony just for u guys! Trust me... Nippon Maru lives up to its name... A love ship! The program has harboured some love for both of them...

Their total luggage weight = aint exceed the total 40kg combined weight allocated to them. A minute later, a man approached them and asked whether he can 'tumpang' the ladies for his box..

then the man said "kindly do not pick up the box upon arrival at Brunei as a security guard will pick up the box on behalf of Princess Ain"

they said, please please please, NO tours, NO museums, just show us the way to shopping districts! See, they brght along an empty luggage bag for shopping... LOL

they stayed at hotel grand central, at the tip of Orchard Road.

though Rozi had a slight challenge to accomplish her mission (shopping)... she was in high heels!! hw to have an effective shopping mission? tsk-tsk

after half-a-day of shopping, dragged the ladies to beach road for the famous (not) tulang, but at the sight of the glorious, blood-red, dish, they turned down the offer and settled for sugar-cane & watermelon juice instead. ;P

ps - they have contributed approximately SG$1K-odd to Singapore's economy so far! Good Job Ladies! ;D

After museum visit, time to meet the other SPYs for dinner at Glutton's Bay (Tuty, Pauline, Hafizah & Mr Whale joined for dinner) but not before going down to Borders for a sneak peek to "books glorious books". heex~ Supposedly go bookstore, buy books or do some readings... BUT we go there to do crazy stunts... hahaha.. we really damn bo-liao.. And thereafter, took a ride down to Esplanade via Suntec & Marina Square.. =)))

the national museum... yea, we WALKED VERY LONGGGG just to reach this place.. grrr~

After Esplanade, we went down the 'road' to have some crash History class by Mr Whale. Went over to North/South/New Bridge Road & Clarke Quay. When I hear his stories, I'm super amused by it. I tried really hard to recall at the back of my mind, if, any of these stories was told by my History teachers. Sadly, I don't have any recollections. Either I sleep in class or teacher NEVER teach. I think its more of the latter.. wahahaha..

Pori's Visit to Sunny Island (Part 1)

Frankly, when I first heard that Pori is coming over to Singapore, my first reaction was HUH?! There's a rising need for me to host her at my house (boon said my house looks like a japanese house! got meh?!) since its her virgin trip to Singapore ALONE plus she's in my SG together with Boon Kian. To be honest, I doubt I'll be able to travel alone without any friends coming along with me. Yups, still in that comfort zone of having friends with me. Imagine sitting in an airplane/bus etc alone without anyone! =.=" Talk about being independent. ROARS~

17th March was the day she arrived. As always, our dear Nimales who is free from work n studies is victimised to be the person to pick Pori up. Apparently, Boon Kian came along. I get to know from Pori that Boon keep on emphasizing to her on the MRT chart where is Changi and where is Jurong! =.=" Boon! U got problem with Jurong area is it?! grrrr~

Yes, east n west are far apart from each other! We are geographically FAR ok!

For first day, Hafizah brought Pori to visit Sentosa and have the chance to ride the luge! Heard that Nimales fall off from the luge?! I wonder how true is that claim! Then they went off to have a night stroll at Mount Faber with Queen & Pauline joining them along. Seems like everyone's history lessons came to life!! Thank you to History Teachers! =P

Second day, I brought Pori to Pioneer Mall (ok fine. not Jurong Point k) for breakfast. She ordered a bowl of wanton noodle and after that, she excitedly told me that she wants to try the exercise equipments found at the recreation area. She tried every single equipment and within 15 minutes, she's done with exercising! Diaoz~ Trying to shed off the weight within a short period of time?!

Pori was so excited to try out the exercise stations found at my house area..

Pori's thinking hard: "can i pull this off?"maybe yes, maybe no.. let's try shall we?!

After that, off we went to meet Hafizah at Bugis for a session of cultural heritage tour. Went to Sultan Mosque, Indian & Chinese Temples, Bugis Street, Haji Lane, Malay Cultural Centre etc. Definitely we had loads of crazy photo taking sessions at the different places. Pori almost gave up on me BUT she's very sporting and still go along with my crazy ideas. =))))

Harry Potter me & Pori.. Had to wear a cloak coz I'm wearing berms.. ok, I look ugly in it la k! Laugh at my ugliness la!!

The worse was when we decided to go over to National Museum! I think the 3 of us ALMOST DIED walking non stop just to find our way there. Imagine walking under scorching hot sun and not knowing exactly where to go but only base on directions given by a kind random stranger who thought we are tourists! At that point of time, how I wished Boon was around =( so he can guide us which bus to take to reach National Museum. Hahaha.. Boon is a walking street directory ok! But all the walking was worth every single drop of sweat! We managed to get in for FREE coz we get to know that Hafizah's school is entitled to free entry. Yesssa! Save the moolah~

fizah's fren who's working at the museum thought I'm also japanese thus giving Pori 2 sets of the brochure..1 for her n 1 for me.. hahahah...

eeeeee... tat was our instant reaction when we saw e photo n get to know that she's a princess.. damn ugly la!

SPYs brought her to temples, Chinatown and Merlion Park!

Finally it's time for Haru to move on to her next stop, Myanmar. Hope she have a great time during her 1 week stay in Singapore.. Apparently, she's on her 2nd SSEAYP trip again.. Such luxury~

Haru's in Town!

Haru (JPY) was in town on 21st Jan all the way till 28th Jan. Apparently people like Charmaine, Pauline & Winnie become her host mother/family.. Charmaine was e one who picked her up from airport and bring her to have some NUS tour.. Haha.. it was all about NUS and more NUS.. Geez~

Charmaine & Rezal join us for coffee session which eventually become a discussion session (another round of DG session) on who to bring Haru around to the famous spots in Singapore.

Before departing home.. despite e tiredness, everyone's happy to have Haru in town!

Apparently, me (Asilah) super free from work on e 22nd decided to volunteer my service to bring Haru around only to realise, my sense of direction super CMI.. =.=" How to be a tour guide? They even say, maybe it should be Haru who bring me around instead! Roars~ Worse come to worse, I just need to tap some strangers and asked, "Sir/Mdm, I'm a foreigner here, can u pls show me the way to XXXX?" I'm pretty sure this tactic will work.. wahaha..

Well, I can now finally announce to the whole world, I didn't get myself lost!! But I got my directions right thanks to my friend, Chi Ho.. But all in all, I'm a proud tour guide to Haru... Suddenly all my history appeared! I just had to repeat this sentence to Haru before I explained things to her, "If my history is right, it should be bla bla bla.. " Just in case, she quote me on my history and happened that all e info which I gave her was wrong, I'm soooo dead! wahaha.. be safe than sorry.. =P

We had a very interactive & fun sharing session with the NYC staff, Liza & Rena. Not forgetting e SSEAYP Alumni who was there too. We shared what we felt and things we think should be improved for the upcoming batch. We share what we felt during homestay & homestay matching ceremony, Institutional Visits, courtesy call etc. It was all about sharing and knowing what we can do to help the program improve to a higher level. Maybe yes, maybe no. We'll see how things go...

On 5th January 2009, SPYs' first visitor from SSEAYP landed at Changi Airport... JPY Romy-Chan, Cecilia's roomie on Nippon Maru!

She ate, she took in the sights of Singapore, she sang and of course she drank! *screams Mo Ippai*

Romy was Violet's guineapig! Violet's training to be a good host "mother" for the PYs of Fuji Maru this year.

3rd Jan - The day where all of us meet up @ Colonel's house for steamboat cum photos exchange session and watching funny videos together and not forgetting its also a farewell party for KHOO HANZHI who's flying to USA on the 14th! =( All e BEST to u gal! See ya 6 mths later! Though it wasn't a full attendance from e SPYs, but at least 3/4 of us came.. Definitely a nice gathering all together!! Had loads of fun eating NON-STOP!!!

Plus watching our PDC Video which DOESN'T have the Chinese Dancers performance.. =.=" But, we managed to catch our dance which was recorded during our National Day on 24th November. It was definitely e proudest moment for the 6 Chinese Dancers!! The dance was superb!! The circle was considered almost perfect.. woohooo~ JENG! JENG! JENGGGGGG!!!!! =P

In the video, Hafizah & Boon Kian + Nim & Wendy dance pretty good as a couple BUT Rezal & Mumtas definitely super CMI laaaaa... Rezal was practically dancing in his own world, way too far from Mumtas and it's like as though she was super afraid of Rezal in case he steps onto her!!! Wahahaz.. She already suffered enough having Rezal as her dance partner! =S

Mango Cheesecake Recipe~

In case u guys wondered how to make the mango cheesecake, here's a recipe written by yours truly, Tuty-San! =P

1. 2 cups of understanding
2. 1 block of Philadelphia Cheese
3. 8 handfuls of happiness
4. 90g butter
5. 164g condensed milk
6. 1000ml of Asilah's laughter
7. A dash of Hanzhi's cluelessness (but she did follow intructions)
8. 10 lines of Rezal's "helpfulness"
9. 6 mins of Hafizah's crushing hands
10. Sprinkle of Cecilia's chocolate+butter expertise
11. Lots of mango
12. Add lotsa photographs generously
13. A few of Tuty's "agaration" and labwork tips... Hahah...
14. Oh yesh, a roll of digestive biscuit...

Simple isn't it to bake a delish mango cheesecake?! *big wide grins*

Delish Mango Cheesecake + Chocolate Crumble

The SPYs who came to have fun and tried out the famous mango cheesecake! *as if*

Few of us (Tuty, Hafizah, Buddy Khoo, Asilah, Pauline, Buddy Lua, Queen, Justin, Cecilia & Rezal) spend our New Year's Eve over at Rezal's Sis House (thanks Sis!) to have a chiling session + advance taking photo session and most importantly, making MANGO CHEESECAKE!!! wooo-lalala~ Isn't it sooo interesting and super cool to end off our year 2008?! wahahaz.. u'll be amazed at how everyone is sooo 'talented' in making cheesecake.. =P Oh ya, not forgetting the impromptu chocolate crumble.. wahaha..

Firstly, we've got Cikgu, Hafizah & Buddy Khoo to buy e ingredients.. Turns out, they forget to buy lemon and aluminium tray! And Cikgu even bought Hershey's chocolate! I'm sure ur wondering wat the hell have mango cheesecake gotta do with chocolate?! All because he read at my sidenote which wrote Hershey's chocolate.. =.="

All that aside, we start to work on our mission.. Cecilia, Buddy Khoo, Hafizah, Tuty, Cikgu and Master Chef (Pauline ONLY SEE but did not do anything!!!!) starts working on the most delicious cheesecake ever which almost turned into a freaking sweet cheesecake!!! *glares at Buddy Khoo*

Those who came for the mini gathering was skeptical about the whole cheesecake thingy when they know the recipe came from Asilah! They wonder will it be successful or disaster! Turns out, they were confident of the recipe BUT NOT Asilah!!! Roars~ If only godmother & stepmother was there to save me! Stepfather ain't helping at all.. =(

Bowling Competition Cum Welcome Ceremony!!!

21st Dec marks e day where our starbowlers show their bowling skills at Kallang Leisure Park~ For 35th Batch, we are represented by Tuty, Cecilia, Nim & Rezal. Apparently, they have to come sooo early in the morning to do all e registration etc. Hahaz.. So pitiful BUT all in the name of having fun yet at the same trying to win a trophy! =)

For e 3 games played, Nim & Cecilia been doing great by getting Turkey & Spares. BUT they did better with e rest of SPY's cheering them from behind! Go Nim! Go Cecilia! Go Tuty! Go Rezal! The only lacking is the pom poms.. Just too bad~

Though its just supposed to be pure fun, but the pressure to walk away with medal simply push them to perform even better. But thanks to Rezal's last throw which eventually did not hit any pin, we managed to get 4th instead of 3rd! We lost to the third position by a SINGLE pin *everyone stares at Rezal* How could this be possible?! OMG!!!

Hey, I'm back online... and Safe in a Crazy World... This song pops into my head as I read and updated myself with the recent news coverage over the world... It's in a sad state and how protected I felt being in Nippon Maru with almost without any worry besides how much to change in each port and if you can get up on time for assembly... Wanted to blog about today... but things changes as I read of the Singaporean who was killed in the Mumbai blast... Sigh... and the thought of YL stuck in Cambodia without any flight back... The demonstrations in Bangkok... Just look at the news today, it's a sad, sad state... It's been awhile since I last read the news...

Here's a shoutout to everyone reading from SG and Vietnam, we are safe as of erm our homestay... Well, I'm safe and at least NL is celebrating another NL's birthday... enjoying the wireless here... And I hope everyone else is safe over at Vietnam.

Tonight is the last night in Vietnam and I went groceries shopping, hahah... See I remembered to get drinks... Ayano-chan got a SIM card at a super reduced price and we had trouble finishing that up!! WE called Japan and Singapore and Vietnam and tried calling all our SG-mates number... Hahah... It's quite hilarious...And learned that someone had to go back to the ship tonight from my SG. Alright, SG C...4 people down... no more from the rest!! Wow, my sg is taking up alot of cabin in the first floor!

This is just a random post while waiting for Ayano-chan to finish bathing... Need to pack my stuff to head to Nippon Maru...

The 28th today... Hahah... I must have gotten the dates wrong the previous time... and I'm back online and not to rushed to finish blogging... Wireless here in Vietnam in my District 3 is FREE, only on the second floor that is!! So here I am blogging and regretting leaving my HDD on the ship...

The homestay in Vietnam is different from the rest of my homestay... In Thailand, I stayed like I was on vacation as I had a well-to-do family where I went to spa on the first day and stayed in a condo apartment...

My Vietnamese house is an interesting 3-storey shophouse-looking one with no shop but technically, you can have a shop there and it's all fine. I shared a room with Ayano-chan, but luckily that I have the chance to have like different homestay and this time shared alot of laughters. BUT I got to really show you the room ... I'm staying on the first floor, the whole room is just below the living room and looked as if it's just attached to the bottom of second floor. But the most fun part and interesting is the way it's constructed... Hahah... I way too tall for my room, the height of my room is really 1.7m and I'm like 8cm taller than that... Hahah... Think Vietnam presents the most opportunities to see new things... Simply because, I'm staying with an average family... with unfamiliar environment... The shops are different than those in Thailand, and those who think that I shopped for random and interesting stuff might be disappointed... Having too much fun soaking the differences and ambience... Made me want to read Vietnam history, it seems that it has loads of historical places... Maybe I was influenced by this book I'm currently reading, a historical triller novel set in Germany (Yup, because I felt like reading up German history and going to Germany next... and I've just read the prologue of the book)...

Like I said earlier, me staying in District 3, we just came back from visiting the REunification Palace and treated with the presidential room and furniture and loads of other PYs and oh... our NLs as well... Hahah... Even when walking to the Notre Dame Cathederal... and the Post Office... I think Vietnam is the place I missed my camera the most...I've always been fascinated by buildings not to mention colonial and renaissance ones... the architecture of the community weaved through times... And to think I'm a chem kid... Hahah...

Me and Ayano-chan had lunch at home... Since I don't eat pork nor other meats to make things earlier for them, they always use a separate wok to cook for me... I had some kind of vietnamese salad crepes called ban-sell (I have no how to spell but it sounds like that!)... A rolled up salad veg with crepe, prawns, tauge, leek and some bean (i think it's pilaf)... Super full... and I didn't know "chomp-chomp" here means rambutan... I was trying to get Ayano-chan to describe to be me but it was kinda futile....

We are going shopping later at the small shop and night market later... Should really avoid the touristy places, not as much fun... Even when I was in Thailand, I didn't go the all the touristy places... hahah... and I shopped as much!!

Hmmmm... it's less that 2 weeks before we depart from Japan... Sigh... oh my, I'll be away for 52 days then... I'll miss the people... and this is going to end soon... sigh... sigh... boo hoo... Time to make the best of the time left... hmmm... and maybe I'll be back online tonight... See ya till then!!

GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM!!

The SPYs arrived Vietnam the morning of 27 Nov 08, after spending a day floating over the blue, blue sea... All safe and sound as we departed from Thailand... News had it that there's been a travel advisary to Bangkok, due to the travel situation... Lucky us, imagine if our YL got stuck in Cambodia and can't fly back to Thailand... Maybe we might an extra night... Sorry, no photos this time... My HDD is on the ship and happily hidden away...

Like always, the day we arrived at the port-of-call is welcomed by welcoming ceremony and port of call... And with an unforgetable dinner as well in a Cantonese Restaurant that had half the SPYs having instant noodles and smuggled sushi (Thanks to Mr Postman & Gang), way past the 11pm curfew...with all the stories of course...

Soon, 12 pm came, and I've yet to pack my things for home... After 4 homestays, I'm getting better and faster at packing my things albeit it's always a little on the heavy side. So I packed my things and then head off to my usual room, yup... room 441 (that's not my room)... For the first time, all of the 441 roomies were in 443... It has became an almost a nightly thing, the getting together that part to share the daily snippets of life onboard...

The morning of 28th, we huddled all our belongings for a 2 night stay in Vietnam. Yup, yup... and I have since taken a stance if I forget anything, i'll just buy... We had an intitutional visit to Bemark ( ops, i might spell wrongly here) and a lunch hosted by them... Way, way better than the dinner the night before... before heading to visit the Tyre company...

The visit to the tyre was company and I was impressed at how "Tuas" the place looked in terms of vast space and the manufacturing ambience and yup at how closely it looked like my company outlook in Sg... But too bad, I was disappointed by the fact that the visit was only 20mins of looking... Sigh, how short my expectation plummeted! And there's no like proper introduction of the manufacturing process, we could do with some diagrams...

Sigh... that was quite a disappointment... Anyway, next was the homematching ceremony... which took quite long...
Anyway, that's wasn't much to say but I super like my Vietnam house!! eSP MY ROOM!! it's 1.7m talll... hahahh...darm... need to go off already... will continue soon...

12 Nov - Nippon Maru sailed into Tanjung Priok Port, Indonesia at 10am.

Our first stop was to the House of Representatives in the city of Jakarta, to make a courtesy call on the Deputy Speaker. It was our privilege to be seated on those plush cushioned chairs meant for elected representatives of the various states and cities of Indonesia, listening to the Deputy Speaker of the House deliver his speech.

The next stop was the ASEAN Secretariat where we were given an interesting lecture on the goals and vision of the ASEAN.

13 Nov – We started that day at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Angklung, a traditional musical instrument of Indonesia was given to each PY as a gift and we played to the tunes of “I have a dream”, “You raise me up” and many more after a quick lesson. This was such a great way to introduce the instrument to us and I could tell that many PYs enjoyed the session.

Just before we were released for our lunch break, Colonel started walking around the front of the hall at an extremely slow pace… gathering the top of his hair with his five fingers in slow motion! That was the sign! Our first test for the “fall in” gesture… (inherited from the SAF)… worked when Colonel gathered us after the first half of the session. I have to say Colonel is really quick with his thinking!

He quickly jumped into action and suggested that as a show of appreciation, the Singapore Contingent should include a short performance of Singapura, using the Angklung during the home-stay matching ceremony later that evening, in addition to the originally planned performance. SPYs were all enthusiastic and agreeable to it and when the decision was made, Charmaine immediately sprang into action and started penning the notes of Singapura.

We gathered after a really quick, boxed lunch… and started our practice. In fifteen minutes, we were almost there with Charmaine conducting us and the melody sounding just right.

Tickled by Colonel’s comical and innocent bluntness on stage, all of us enjoyed ourselves putting the act together =) Well, the performance that evening turned out great and we were delighted that everyone appreciated our gesture as we received cheers and applause.

15 Nov – My (Venetia) home-stay in Jakarta was an experience for me. Baby from Lao and I was matched to a young, simple and down to earth couple who were host parents for the first time. They lived simply and were loving people who took time off from their work on Thursday evening and Friday to receive us and show us around.

I say that it was quite an experience for me because I had not lived such a life for a while I guess, and it took me some time to get used to it. Amenities were unlike what we have in Singapore. The entire experience made me realized that as I aged and the more independent I become, comfort has become part of my way of life. It also made me realized how I have taken some things for granted. This home-stay had made me appreciate the way things are around me... How, my government had done so much to ensure that the standard of living for us was constantly improving.

One thing which I really enjoyed when I was in Jakarta was the food! Yum! I was lucky to have been able to try Javanese and Sumatran food, thanks to my foster parents. I had not eaten so much rice in my life!

It's been like 19 days since we left Singapore, OMG... Nothing... Days been going zipping super fast... We all had a safe 6-day cruise from Japan to Brunei. None of us really get seasick except for Desmond... It's been fun, relentless and the ever-so-looking-forward contingent meeting with Colonel...

Wooohooo our NL was out in the local news in Kobe Prefecture representing SG K! coolnesss~ Besides SG K, SG B (Asilah & Boon Kian) which is in Fukushima Prefecture was also out in the news! Double cooolnesss!!!

Everyone enjoyed their homestay with the Japanese family. Each of us was treated like their own sons and daughters by their host family. They provided with everything that we need. Indeed great hospitality by them. Applaud~ we get to try loads of Japanese food and I think each one of us GAIN WEIGHT!!!!! time to exercise SPYs~ *looks at Kai Fen* Oh ya, besides food, we also get to seeee LOTS of CUTE Japanese guys and gals!!!!! *eyes everywhere*

- We did a courtesy call to Vice Gabernor of Niigata prefecture. We get to interact with the Local Youths (LY) and we get to learn how to make sushi and rice balls named Onigiri. I think when I go back S'pore, i'll start making sushi!!! Besides that, we were divided into smaller groups and we were brought to the different interst places of Niigata. =(

TOKYO HERE WE AREEEE!!!!!!

YAY!!!! We finally reached Tokyo safely after 7 hours of flight~ *wipes forehead*

Before that, everyone had to report to PYSS for last minute packing and helping e loggies to bring all the cartons of stuffs to the lorry.. what a tiring morning to start with!! but things went so smoothly that we left PYSS by 5am. a very good achievement! hehex.. when we reached airport, things also went as planned.. we got our stuffs and luggages checked in etc all thanks to the precise instructions given by our dear Rezal, Winnie & Venetia. =P

Finally its time for us to checked in and we had the Alumni's who came down to give us their well wishes. Grace (SIS) was sooo sweet by giving everyone of us a photo with sweet words! She has been one of our backbone who help us along the way. Touched can?! =)

Thursday was e day where we first had our practice at SOKA.. it was basically getting to know where exactly we should stand etc. Realised that, the stage was really, really elongated instead of wide! how to dance like tat?? but we managed it well (i supposed)..

since there isn't exactly backstage, all our small talks or should i say whisper (did we whisper?), hahaz.. more like laughing and joking merrily.. it can be heard clearly from the front! i didn't know that our sound can travel all e way to e front!! o_O" due to tat, for e next practice we are given 'warning' to keep our mouth shut~ the perfect time to train our mouth to smile widely.. oh wells, just in case any 'paparazzi' were to take any unglam shots, e smile will cover it all.. hehehe *big wide smile*

We were basically walking so fast just to ensure that we can get to do a train scene BUT we are just in time to see the board says: "Train service ended!!" *fainted* and e officer already want to close the gates and eventually got her to have it open till we finish our photoshoot.. how nice of her.. =)

Netball Saturday and Big Balls Sunday

Sat was pretty ok as we only had discussions and amazingly, NETBALL to end our day! Even though we played under the torturous hot sun, it was all worth it. Nim, managed to shed a few pounds, and together with Venetia battled the 2 attackers, Tuty and Chiku. On the other side, Rezal partnered with Hafizah to battle against Colonel and Siti. The score was tied at 2-2 at halftime. Rezal, being a tchoukball player, was not used to throwing balls into nets. he missed SEVEN times. But after being challenged by Queen, managed to start scoring on the eighth try onwards!

Sunday was definitely the most knocked out day for most of us! omg~ die can?! oh wells, apparently everyone still survived.. =) y do i say we can die?! we had to do so many rounds of the whole storyboard with only ard 5-10 mins of rest after completing one set of the story! the legs all becoming like jellyfish after doing loads of dancing.. hmmm.. very tired lehhh~

nevertheless, each dance group improved alot especially the bhangra dance! *sings the nimales song - Nima, Nima, Nimales~ they are getting so good and i think Wendy is dancing like a pro bollywood dancer! *feweeet* butttt, Rezal is forever knocking Mumtas while dancing.. when can he ever stop doing tat?! -_-" Not forgetting, Boon Kian's expression whenever he dance (so comical!)

during the first few rounds of the practice, we did no recording.. but for the last round, we did a recording and we manage to see each others mistakes and how to improve the dance to a new level!

watching the video is really very funny!!! Desmond was commented for having big b#**s! I think that is very MANLY of him, don't ya think? *ahem...haha! oh and we anticipated and waited, and anticipated and waited for Boon Kian's solo move only to realise that as soon as he jumped forward to start his solo, he was not captured within the camera's angle! HORROR! not forgetting Tan Charmaine who went up the stage with one fan for her chinese dance. and then went frantically backstage to get another while the rest waited with their pose!! this is slapstick comedy at its best!

next training onwards will be at SOKA! it's getting very close to our PDC!! *bites fingers* let's pray we put up an excellent performance.

Lastly, to the muslim SPYs, we wish you SELAMAT HARI RAYA! Maaf zahir dan batin!

20th Sept was a day of labour intensive session....It was the day that was a little unusual and at the same time it was a day that unveiled the 'other side' of some individuals. Stay tuned to find out more......

This is the group involved in the making of the contingent board assisted by the laundry group. It seemed like the most easiest activity among the 3 ...... but it definitely was not. Kudos to the team which persevered and made the perfect boxes for everyone. Esp to Tuty and Hanzhi who slept very little the night before...hope you gals are sleeping right now... :)

And.....our beautiful backdrop for our contingent board. I shall say it now before anyone does....ours will be the best contingent board on board. :p

Last Residential Weekend :'(

The 2-month long Orientation Programme has finally come to an end… Although that frees up a lot of time for us, we’re all feeling a little lost without spending our Tuesday nights together! Of course, though, everyone’s still busy preparing for the Pre-Departure Concert and for the actual trip itself!

ANYWAY, must talk about our last residential weekend first!

Our last residential weekend (Aug 30-31, 2008) was held at NACLI... and i think it was the most exciting weekend EVER!!! on the first evening, after all the speeches, it was ANGEL REVELATION TIME!!!

so we finally found out who those presents (or lack thereof) were coming from!

after the revelation we all went out for supper at Fongseng. Why is this bloggable? because NACLI usually locks itself up (no actually the guards lock the gate) at 11pm, so no one's supposed to enter or exit after 11pm. we'd have to wait till the next morning! this resulted in us calling in supper from Mac's for more than 2 weekends already.

BUT... because it was our last weekend, exceptions could be made, right? so we spoke to the guard about it and went off for supper at Fong Seng (WHY WASN'T THIS DONE EARLIER!!) but actually to be exact we ate at The Cheese Prata Place, not Fong Seng, although the entire stretch is often collectively referred to as Fong Seng.

Okay its not our first time there, but this time we have so many of us! We found out that other than being a security guard at Ping Yi Sec, Rezal (mao mao maomaomao) was also an abang at the cheese prata shop! he came around and started taking orders - how efficient!

after supper we were all so tired. so we went back and had a good night's rest.......

only to wake up late the following morning!!!!!!

many of us didnt even brush teeth when we ran down for our usual PE lessons with Mr Rezal and Ms Ang.

This time they decided to torture us by making us run up the hill to Kent Ridge Park... where we had a crash course on Singapore history with Ms Tng at Point266 (i'm randomly quoting)... which is part of the hill where we can oversee the drain where many Malay soldiers jumped across when escaping the Japanese soldiers after days of fighting on the hill.

It was a little solemn at first but when jogging back to NACLI we decided to start cheering! and the many healthy Singaporeans who were also jogging at KR Park on a Sunday morning were amazed by our cheers! Some even cheered along! Cheers are contagious.

The afternoon was less exciting, though equally fruitful... we had a meeting with the Orientation committee to conclude the Orientation Programme... only to be told how often we still had to meet up thanks to cultural practices!

ITS OKAY, ITS ALRIGHT... S-P-Y, S-P-Y FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!

i'd like to cheer hanzhi and tuty on for contingent booklet, siti for cultural performance ... and many others who have other things to rush. JIAYOU!

Power-packed weekend!

Another weekend has pass.... as we look forward to the last orientation weekend this coming weekend, here are some photos to give a glimpse of a very exciting and happening weekend.... =)

Basically, the weekend started off with some very powerful and creative cheering exercise by a special guest..... presenting Apple!

He was truly one awesome cheerleader, and even tried stealing Charmaine's Heart..... =p

Next we had committee updates and discussions, and after a nice full dinner, it was our first glimpse of the cultural PDC. Though it was our first shot, i must say it was pretty well done, though we still have quite a bit of polishing up to do.... =)

the night ended with a world cafe's style sharing with the leaders and NL himself... quite a fulfilling session as the contingent shared thier views and inputs moving forward.

The next day we had our morning activity as usual, and this time round, we played a fun game of Captain's Ball using fruits instead... quite a mess we made as fruits went flying through the air and splattering as it hit the ground!

The remainder of the day was mostly cultural practises, and also polishing up the multi-cultural dance and fun dance! It was great to see everyone doing thier best and getting the steps in order! Good job everyone!

COLONEL TAY TIONG BENG

"Almost thirty years has passed since my SSEAYP experience began.

And as I watched this year’s Singapore Contingent prepares itself for their departure, the memories of my own preparation are brought to mind. Though it was simpler then, no formal photoshots, not so many attires, no 8 weeks orientation programme plus countless weekdays sessions, it was not so much difference.

The focus of bringing together 35 individuals during my time, staying-in at NACLI, endless of songs and cultural practices making them into a team, a contingent representing Singapore, making sure that we will be able to carry our flag high and keeping up with what the previous batches have done are the same. The big difference for me is that I am now doing this as a National Leader(NL) and not as a Participating Youth.

Though it seems like a long time, thought the ship that I have sailed on has become bigger and will be changing again, SSEAYP spirit has not changed, and the unbelievable experience where I had the chance to meet and develop friendships with many young people has not changed though there are now more countries and more diversities.

It is indeed a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I remember how we felt that the program would be such a stretch at 52 days. And yet, when it was all over, we wished it could go on forever. It was definitely sad and painful when we had to part after having stayed together for such a long time, that it seemed almost cruel.

No more were the sounds of the morning call chime with the waves rolling pass my cabin window and over were the movie nights, meeting on the upper decks after…(in the past, it was trying to avoid the NL!!!) and country performances in Dolphin Hall.

You will probably not have a clue when ex-PYs keep mentioning about the SSEAYP spirit. You will probably appreciated it more immediately when the SSEAYP 08’s closing ceremony curtains is drawn. This spirit will then exist in the long distance calls, emails, pictures and stories that your SSEAYP participants keep sending to each other.

Only when you go on to express our concern for the well being and safety of our fellow PYs irregardless of whether they were affected by events, disasters or unrest, only when we start visiting their countries and dropped in on them, only if we start to appreciate the countries above the tourist spots, only if we try all means to get to the Re-unions and the get-togethers, then can we said that we truly understand and experience the SSEAYP spirits. And here I am not just referring to fellow PYs from other countries but also your very own.

SSEAYP actually goes beyond the solidarity groups, discussion programs, homestays, country programs and illicit kitchen tours. It not only contributes to our perspective of ASEAN or brings us closer to a world free of political, language, immigration or religious barriers but ultimately, how we see ourselves for who we are and what we want in life.

Keep up the preparations and be really for the flow of SSEAYP Spirits."

" The 35^th Singapore Contingent has taken the brave step forward, the plot unfolding as the days pass. Every year the team is different and this year I am proud to lead such a dynamic team eager to soar and excel in every single thing they do. We came together rather inept, lacking skills and knowledge of some aspects required for the programme.

However, time and again, as a team we have proven that perseverance yields success and we have managed to overcome every obstacle that comes in our way. The road is long. But the journey is fulfilling thus far.

The 26 voices from the Singapore Contingent has been rehearsing these lines, looking forward to singing them with our international counterparts on board Nippon Maru. We have also been trying to pick up common greeting phrases in Japanese and other ASEAN languages, with the hope of bringing us closer to you, our friends-to-be!

The Singapore contingent has came a long way from a group of individuals from various backgrounds, to become a strongly-bonded team through our weeks of trainings, games and dance rehearsals. We are looking forward to doing the same with the rest of the PYs, as we sail the blue blue ocean onboard Nippon Maru!

" When I was told to write something for this blog, I asked myself “What in the world am I going to write about”? Even at this point of time, my thoughts are incoherent and my fingers hover above my keyboard, not knowing where to begin...

To you, who have somehow stumbled on our humble blog while surfing the internet, I would like to say WELCOME! I hope through these pages, you find out more on what we do in preparation for the 35^th SSEAYP 2008 and possibly get inspired to take part in future years.

I must say, our contingent has come a long way from the awkward moments of initial introductions, to the intimate sharing of our individual milestones. Many of us struggled initially to the sacrifices that we had to make to ensure that we do not miss our weekday and weekend orientation trainings. However, as time went by, friendships were forged and being the dedicated, committed individuals we are, orientation training became habitual and no longer a sacrifice.

The Singapore Contingent came together and started off with a blank canvas, not knowing what colours to splash on or what designs to add on to make it worthy for showcasing. As the weeks passed, things began to take shape - the contingent logo was conceptualized, the uniforms were selected, the story-board for the cultural performance was fine tuned, cheers were getting louder with gusto and songs were sung with more confidence and conviction!

Today, each of us has added some colour and design to the canvas through our various contributions be it a skill, a knowledge or just pure commitment. It has now become a large montage of artwork, which will be showcased to fellow PYs from Japan and ASEAN. Just two more months of hard work, dedication and refining, we will surely be all set and ready to put our best foot forward for the programme.

Before I end off, some final notes to all SPYs 2008. Hang in there, look out for each other, be there for each other, stay positive and most importantly of all have loads of fun!"

Hahahahhaha.... what can i say about the weekend that we've spent together but that it was so full of smiles laughter posers and snap snap snap snap snap snap? Yes, it was an amazing weekend when we took the photos for our contingent booklet. We started with the indoor shoot at NTU. Our dear PRM got professionals to come in and do our make up and hair. Think this is the first time in my life I ever got professional make-up.... and I look.... so totally not me.... hahaha.... ok, enough about me, below's some pics of the day:

After a deserving weekend break, we are all back re-charged and energised to move forward with greater poise to take the contingent to greater heights!!! It has certainly been an enjoyable National Day with my team mates. Those crazy moments, hearing each other's life stories and the ongoing laughters are what bond us closer. Thanks all for such a wonderful time! Let's continue to make new waves and strengthen our friendships!

Just b4 deciding goin to Changi airport.. we were all getting a little "high" already..

It was the first day of hungry ghost month and there we were at the eerie and dimly lit Ping Yi Secondary School...

We had the most interesting sharing sessions, where we talked about the 5 milestones of our lives...diamonds, SAP schools and life stories! I never knew there were so many scholarship recipients in the contingent :)

And of cos when it came to the angel n mortal game, our poor PR & Marketing committee didn't get their angels' gifts. What's all happening? The ever-disappointed Cecilia was cursing her non-existant angel who refused to write her even a short note despite her grumbling and public display of anger (PDA).
*PS: Can her angel please do something to simmer it before she burns the pink box?! *Glares*

Hey All,

We are very glad and proud to have our very own SPY, who clinch an award which recognises and encourages youth who has shown outstanding perseverance and courage in venturing out to pursue their dreams, lifting themselves out of everyday well-trodden paths of endeavour and fufillment.

The award attempts to celebrate alternative success stories of youth. Nominees should have a “Dare to Dream spirit and should inspire others to take a bold step in taking up ventures to realise their dreams."

I hope that we can learn and benefit something from his life story. =)

“I CAN and I WILL” is my personal mantra and it has certainly worked wonders! Nothing is impossible once I have made up my mind to pursue it. Three years ago, when I joined Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), I was awestruck by the many success stories that the school shared with students. I told myself that “if they could do it, so could I”. I wanted to soar above what I could ever dream of.

Now, my dreams have come true and over the years, I have touched the lives of hundreds through community projects, and even representing Singapore at international competitions, conferences and youth summits.

As a child at Tao Nan Primary School, I was a ‘terror’; getting punished for not doing my homework, skipping school for half a year and playing truant in class. Although I passed my PSLE, the problems did not disappear. I continued to skip classes, played pranks and was disruptive in class. My parents were so desperate that they sent me for counseling but that did not work.

When I failed my exams in Secondary 2 and was transferred to the Normal (Academic) stream, I was horrified and depressed. I looked squarely in the mirror and decided that “enough was enough”. I ‘pulled up my socks’ and did well enough to secure a place in NP. Entering the polytechnic was like a new beginning for me.

I saw it as a chance to start with a ‘clean slate’ and was determined to do well from Day One. Through sheer hard work and determination, I did well academically, held various leadership positions and made community contributions by way of projects under “Students In Free Enterprise” (SIFE).

My team-mates and I developed a board game titled “Money Sense” to teach financial literacy skills to students, organised a national competition aimed to promote the spirit of enterprise called the “National Youth Enterprise Challenge” (NYEC), worked with Muhammadiyah Welfare Home to impart communication skills to delinquent teenagers, started an initiative to promote creativity and entrepreneurship amongst young and talented women, collaborated with Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and the University of Malta in compiling five business booklets aimed at youngsters and even wrote and implemented a 10-chapter English curriculum for children in a Chinese rehabilitation school in Suzhou, China.

Since then, with the Money Sense board game, I have gone on to win first prize at the Global Entrepolis @ Singapore’s Big IdEA Invention Slam and represented Singapore to present the Money Sense Financial Literacy project to a global audience at SIFE World Cup 2005 (Toronto, Canada) and to share best practices in running a SIFE programme in Singapore at SIFE World Cup 2006 (Paris, France).

In the course of my endeavors, many people were skeptical about my ‘audacious’ dreams/goals and there were times when I wanted to ‘throw in the towel’.
I was fortunate to have the encouragement of Mrs Choo Jin-Yi, my academic manager and lecturer. She would sit me down and sort out my priorities when I was overwhelmed by school work and co-curricular activities. Her trust and belief in me gave me confidence to press on.

In 2006, when national television programme “Generation Next 3” profiled me as a national top achiever, I was convinced that I could be a role model despite my history as a problem child. I applied and succeeded in being the only Singapore representative at the International Youth Leadership Conference 2006 (Prague, Czech Republic), and more recently at the United Nations World Youth Assembly for Road Safety (Geneva, Switzerland) in April 2007.

I am currently serving my National Service while waiting to enter the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School, where I have been awarded the prestigious NUS Global Merit Scholarship.

This is the story of how a ‘problematic’ child strives for excellence to become a success story. I hope that others like me who may be ‘late bloomers’, or parents/teachers who may think that their child is hopeless, will now view each individual in a better light to believe in the motto: Potest Qui Vult (If there is will, there is a way).

I have learnt that life is not just about studying, getting good grades, building a strong resume or chasing money. I believe that life is about being different, where each of us can reach for our dreams boldly and with a strong sense of conviction that nothing will stop us.
It is this desire for excellence and a passion to succeed that makes life interesting and worth living for.

A New Week, A New Look... (Or almost)

Alright, fellows SPYs... Finally, the new look is almost up and we can start blogging! It's almost ready, will tweak the html to change a couple of things and remove the "sample" photo above to make space for our more inclusive contingent photo. Pardon that, couldn't get gmail to download the group photos.

The start of August brought us a weekend (2-3 Aug) of loads of physical activities. Unlike previous residential weekends, 2-3 Aug was packed with line-dancing, tchuckball (hahah... don't know how to spell this), more dancing, more games, dragon-boating and just 1 presentation!

This was also the first week, our newly elected YL, AYL and DYL took charge and of course, we'll just have to introduce them... later with the photos!!

We started the day with a game of "Have you ever...?" while waiting for our dance practice to hilarious!!! Now, we know the some of the "deepest" secret like ______ on the MRT platform or _____ in the cupboard. At 2.30pm, we had session of line dancing with Helen and Allen, and boy, how our AYL, Winnie breezed throught THAT- the Cha-cha with 4-walls turns... And we thought the steps for the second was easy! Front, Point, Point, Back, Point, Point, Side, Point, Kick... Till we heard the song (Mickey by Toni Basil). Then we changed our minds, but all of us a great time dancing our feets away... Plus our YL, Rezal, received quite a number of attentions with his moves. Wonder they've caught it on video and put it up on Youtube...

After the dances, we learned thuckball (Erm, still don't know how to spell it, with a little permutation, I might get it right... Hahah). It's confusingly simple game and it took us awhile to get the hang of getting the ball bouncing the "spring board" out of the circle. Fun, that is!!

Dinner was a simple chicken rice with loads of laughter... Of course, we need to brush up all our dining ettiquette with our very own J. Lee (SIS Board Member, ah). Another dance session was next with some cool but simple moves... Throw it with the music, we all forgot our dance steps. My sister, Fitri, came and blew us away and we pointed out Winnie and Qiao Er to remember the dance and recap with us.

One the highlight of the day was our very own sharing session of 5 milestones each of us felt are important. It definitely brought the contingent closer and helped us understand each other better. We oooo-ed, aaaa-ed and almost teared ... heartfelt stories about each other. It ironic how we are having presentations and discussion to know ASEAN and Japan yet, we didn't had time to really bond and know the PY sitting next us. It showed that we are in this ship together for a long run (minimum 3 years, guys!!) and not just for fast and furious impact. This would pave away for a more meaningful friendship.

So guys... we've got a few weeks more together... and let's get the spirit up till Dec!! 2nd part coming soon... after I've gotten the photos up... You don't think I would blog without any photos right? In meantime... enjoy the snippets that PR&M Peeps will share!!
